On March 2, 1933, an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 8.4 struck the Sanriku coast in the Thoku area of Honshu, Japan. The resulting wave wreaked enormous havoc.

With a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale, the 2010 Chile earthquake and tsunami (Spanish: Terremoto del 27F) struck off the coast of central Chile on Saturday, February 27 at 03:34 local time (06:34 UTC). The strong shaking lasted for almost three minutes.

On February 28, 2001, at 10:54:32 local time, the Nisqually earthquake struck and lasted for about a minute. The intraslab earthquake had a maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII and a moment magnitude of 6.8. (Severe). Although the epicenter was in the southern Puget Sound, northeast of Olympia, Oregon, British Columbia, eastern Washington, and Idaho all experienced the jolt. This was the most recent of three significant earthquakes that shook the Puget Sound region over a 52-year span and resulted in $1 to $4 billion in property damage. Several hundred people were hurt, and one person passed away from a heart attack.

The Chinese philosopher Chang Heng created the first seismoscope in the year A.D. 132. This was a sizable urn with eight dragon heads facing the eight cardinal directions of the compass on its outside. A toad with its mouth open toward the dragon was located beneath each dragon's head. One or more of the eight dragon-mouths would spew a ball into the toad's open mouth when there was an earthquake. Which of the dragons launched its ball depended on the direction of the shaking. According to reports, the sensor picked up an earthquake that occurred 400 miles distant but wasn't felt near the seismoscope. Since the seismoscope's inside is unknown, most theories presume that there is motion of some sort
