The earthquake that struck California on April 18, 1906 is considered one of the most significant earthquakes in history. Its significance today stems from the abundance of scientific knowledge it has produced rather than its mere size. The earthquake, which ruptured the San Andreas fault's northernmost 296 miles from northwest of San Juan Bautista to the triple junction at Cape Mendocino, astonished modern geologists with its huge, horizontal displacements and long rupture length.

Physical oceanographer, Angel Amores of the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies in Spain, said the shockwave took approximately 36 hours to circle the earth. It traveled at the speed of sound and spread in concentric rings from the Hunga Tonga, Hunga Haapai volcano.

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck western Washington on April 13, 1949. It had its epicenter near the coast between Olympia and Tacoma, and it was felt strongly in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. It was the most powerful earthquake to strike Puget Sound since 1700. Eight people were killed, and dozens of others were seriously injured.

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) — A large earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Saturday, although there were no initial reports of injuries or major damage, according to the country's emergency department.

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake recently struck just east of Australia. The quake struck at a depth of just over 6 miles near Tadine, New Caledonia. There was no immediate tsunami warning issued and no damage or injuries were reported.

The 1946 Aleutian Islands earthquake occurred near the Aleutian Islands, Alaska on April 1. The shock had a moment magnitude of 8.6 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VI (Strong). It resulted in 165–173 casualties and over $26 million in damage.
