ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) — A large earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Saturday, although there were no initial reports of injuries or major damage, according to the country's emergency department. According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD), the 5.2 magnitude quake impacted the town of Puturge in Malatya province around 5:02 p.m. local time (1402 GMT). At a depth of 6.7 kilometers, the tremor was detected (4.2 miles). "So far, we haven't received any unfavorable feedback.Malatya Governor Aydin Barus told state-run Anadolu Agency that "our teams are continuing their digitization activities on the ground. Murat Kurum, Turkey's Minister of Environment and Urbanization, tweeted that the Turkish government was keeping a close eye on the issue. Turkey is situated on large fault lines, hence earthquakes are common. In January 2020, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the adjacent Elazig province, killing 41 people and wounding almost 1,600 others. A strong earthquake struck northwest Turkey in 1999, killing at least 17,000 people.
