More than 40 earthquakes, with magnitudes ranging from 3.5 to 5.8, rocked off the coast of Oregon on Tuesday, drawing the attention and alarm of millions in the area and igniting one of North America's most active fault lines.
The sequence of earthquakes, which started early on Tuesday and continued into Wednesday, were all concentrated 200–250 miles (or more) west of the coastal town of Newport, Oregon, far enough to go mostly unnoticed on land but causing quite a stir considering the region's seismic history.
