A significant number of Americans reside in regions prone to earthquakes, particularly in densely populated urban areas like Los Angeles, where the impact of major seismic events can be financially devastating for structures and critical infrastructure.

Apart from Los Angeles, other metropolitan regions with the highest potential for economic damages include San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Salt Lake City, and Memphis, as indicated by government estimates.

These risk assessments are based, in part, on a comprehensive study conducted by the US Geological Survey, which aimed to provide valuable insights to municipalities and insurance companies regarding earthquake hazards.
