On February 1, 1938, the Banda Sea earthquake occurred, with an estimated moment magnitude of 8.4 and a Rossi-Forel intensity of VII (Very strong tremor). In the Banda Sea region, this oblique-slip event produced catastrophic tsunamis that reached heights of up to 1.5 meters, although no one was killed.
